TIMING BELT ALERT We have found that, more often than not, when we remove the oil pans on these cars we will find several of the bolts loose, or missing. This experience has been verified to us through our contacts with other independent BMW shops around the world. It is definitely an issue on these cars. In several cases we have found these loose bolts can get caught up in the timing chain and cause severe engine damage ( a very expensive repair).
We believe that it is very cost effective to remove the lower oil pan and check or replace any loose bolts before they cause a problem. This job is easily accomplished while doing an oil change for an additional $150.
On cars that have a valve interference engine and use a rubber timing belt, it is very important that the timing belt be changed each 50,000 miles or 4 years, whichever comes first. It has been our experience that this is very important. Do not run them over 4 years or in mileage or a costly repair will result. |
HEAD BOLT ALERT!! These cars were originally equipped with a hex headed head bolt, which has been updated to a torx head bolt. Lately we have seen several of these old style bolts fail, leaving the broken off heads loose among the valve train. In several cases this loose piece has gotten caught under the cam, causing major engine damage, including cracked heads, broken cams, and in one case the complete destruction of an engine. We can easily determine if you have these old style bolts by looking through the oil filler opening. The old style bolts are hexagonal and the new style are "torx". (They look like a six pointed star) The bolts can be replaced without removing the cylinder head. This takes about 1.5 hours or during a valve adjustment,or with service one or a service two it would add about .5 hour to the job. The bolt kit cost is approximately $26. We believe it is definitely worth the time to check your bolts to see if they have been updated. If you have ever had a head gasket replacement they may have already been done. Please don't risk a costly breakdown, check those old head bolts today! |
